What the color of your fingernails say about your health.

I think we can all agree that there is something wonderful about taking the time to take care for our nails. Whether you take an hour or two and go to a salon near you, or you paint your own nails in the comfort of your own home, there is something about having beautifully manicured nails that makes you feel good. An unbelievable 60% of women have their nails done monthly, but is nail care really important? Is it just a luxury we enjoy from time to time?

Turns out, taking care of your nails can help you determine the health of your body, and is essential to the health of your hands. We use our hands for virtually everything, EVERYDAY! If you don’t show your nails some love, this could cause fungal or bacterial infections in the nail folds (the skin surrounding your nail bed), which could lead to more serious health issues. Your nails act as indicators for malnutrition, kidney disease, liver disease, and other health problems. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice severe discoloration on or around your nails.

Think of your fingernails and toenails as little shields protecting your fingers and toes; not keeping your nails healthy makes the tissue beneath them vulnerable to infection via the things you touch everyday. According to dermatologists, nails are considered healthy if their color is consistent and their texture is smooth. An adult should trim their nails weekly, as germs can remain trapped underneath the nail and cause infection. Hangnails should never be ripped, but should be clipped with standard nail clippers. Your nails should also be moisturized often, and remember to clean underneath them in the shower! If you work with cleaning products or other chemicals often, be sure to wear gloves to prevent your nails from softening.
